Fault - perpendicular aftershock clusters following the 2003 Mw = 5 . 0

چکیده

[1] To explore aftershock-triggering mechanisms for the 2003 Big Bear, California earthquake sequence, we determined differential travel-times and applied the double-difference technique to relocate these events, which formed three clusters. The main cluster coincides with the 3 km long northwest striking sub-vertical mainshock fault. The other two sub-vertical clusters, located at opposite ends of the mainshock rupture, are almost perpendicular to the mainshock fault, contradicting the 60 separation angle of conjugate faults as predicted from frictional laws. Allowing for a 30 uncertainty in the cataloged strike, dip and rake values about 75% of the aftershocks are strike-slip as determined from first motion and complete waveform moment tensor inversions. We use a mainshock conceptual slip model to derive Coulomb Failure Stress regions, and assess correlations between stress increases and aftershock locations. We conclude that the perpendicular aftershock clusters were triggered by the mainshock static stress perturbation. Citation: Chi, W.-C., and E. Magnitude Estimates of Two Large Aftershocks of the 16 December 1811 New Madrid Earthquake

The three principal New Madrid mainshocks of 1811–1812 were followed by extensive aftershock sequences that included numerous felt events. Although no instrumental data are available for either the mainshocks or the aftershocks, available historical accounts do provide information that can be used to estimate magnitudes and locations for the large events. In this article we investigate two of t...

Fault friction parameters inferred from the early stages of afterslip following the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake

[1] We use subdaily GPS time series of positions in the first 5 hours following the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake (Mw = 8.0) located offshore of Hokkaido, Japan, to estimate frictional parameters for the afterslip zone on the subduction interface. The data show little motion immediately after the earthquake with sudden acceleration at about 1.2 hours after the main shock. This coincides with the ...

Earthquake Monitoring in Southern California for Seventy-Seven Years (1932–2008)

The Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) has produced the SCSN earthquake catalog from 1932 to the present, a period of more than 77 yrs. This catalog consists of phase picks, hypocenters, and magnitudes. We present the history of the SCSN and the evolution of the catalog, to facilitate user understanding of its limitations and strengths. Hypocenters and magnitudes have improved in qualit...
